LZHISTORY - ON THIS DAY IN LZ HISTORY
Led Zeppelin : The Yardbirds: Only Jimmy Left To Form The New Yardbirds
Report and Interview by Chris Welch, Melody Maker, October 1968 (вот бы заполучить ее оригинал и посмотреть как там написано на самом деле)))

OCTOBER 14
On this day in 1985, Robert Plant disbanded the touring and recording group that had worked for him during the past three years.

Their final concert, a Sept. 10 show at London's Wembley Arena, ended the U.K. tour in support of Plant's third album. Today, the solo artist made the announcement that everybody in the band is out.

The positive aspect of this decision was that four fine musicians were given back to the music industry: drummer Ritchie Hayward, bassist Paul Martinez, keyboardist Jezz Woodroffe and guitarist Robbie Blunt (see below for more details about these musicians).

Another positive look at it was that Plant would hopefully be inspired to improve on his distinct sound. Parke Puterbaugh had reviewed Plant's third album for Rolling Stone magazine in the summer. Puterbaugh asked, "This couldn't be the same goldenhaired lemon squeezer who fronted Led Zeppelin, could it?"

His review was mostly positive, and he ended with the comment: "Plant has refrained from banking on the past. Instead, he's banking on the present, reinventing himself as a chameleon with a sharp ear for new sound."

Despite the development of Plant's own new sound, many people hoped and expected that Led Zeppelin would reunite. The band did attempt early the following year, but the attempt failed when Plant backed out. Soon, he was back to recruiting new musicians for a new touring lineup.
The departing band

Robbie Blunt & Paul Martinez
Way back before the days of Led Zeppelin, three of Plant's friends from the Band of Joy, namely bassist Jon Pasternak and guitarists Paul Lockey and Kevyn Gammond, formed a band called Bronco. Between 1970 and 1973, they released three albums. Another member of the group was a young, aspiring blues guitarist named Robbie Blunt.
Blunt went on to play for Silverhead in the mid '70s, a group featuring the vocals of Michael Des Barres. When this group split up, Des Barres formed L.A.'s Detective, and Blunt joined a revival of the British blues group Chicken Shack.
Originally part of the blues boom in the late '60s, Chicken Shack survived several personnel changes until December 1974, when the group disappeared for two years. In 1977, founding member Stan Webb resurrected the group, with Blunt sharing his guitar duties.
On bass in Chicken Shack was Paul Martinez, fresh from a year's stint with Paice Ashton & Lord. Jon Lord (keyboards) and Ian Paice (drums) left David Coverdale's Deep Purple to form this hard rock "trio" with Tony Ashton (vocals).
Martinez' stint with Chicken Shack was a short one, but Blunt continued to play with the group until 1982, when his involvement in Robert Plant's solo project demanded his time more.

Jezz Woodroffe
In the intervening years, a keyboardist named Jezz Woodroffe released a solo album in 1980, called Opposite Directions. This instrumental LP on the Graduate label did nothing to shatter any charts, however, it did gain the attention of Robert Plant, who initiated Woodroffe into his studio band the next year.

Ritchie Hayward
Ritchie Hayward was the drummer for Little Feat beginning with the group's inception in 1969 through its end 10 years later (see below for discography). The jazzy drummer went on in 1979 to pursue session work and guest spots, before being picked up by Robert Plant for his third album.

New Plant single is tall, cool, white,
clean & neat, and has free samples

1988 – Robert Plant's latest hit single, "Heaven Knows," featured a guitar solo from Jimmy Page. Plant's follow-up, released today, is no different in this regard, although it does bring to the fore a few more allusions from the days of Led Zeppelin.

The very riff of this "Tall Cool One" is based on "Train Kept A Rollin'," a live staple from Led Zeppelin's stage act in various years.

Also on the song, Plant marks his continued journey through the 1980s making use of recorded samples of some Zep riffs, which he said are "the mightiest the world has ever heard."

The practice of sampling old songs is no stranger to the music scene; among the many fine examples of sampling, producer Rick Rubin had sampled the sound of John Bonham's drums from "When the Levee Breaks" for use in the Beastie Boys' "Rhymin & Stealin" in 1986. Even before that, the U.K. No. 1 song "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood used some clips of Bonham's drums from "Moby Dick."

Some of the samples in "Tall Cool One" can be almost indiscernible. "Throughout every verse, there's this sonic dive-bomber sound," said Plant. "I played it to Jimmy and he didn't even know what it was. It's the guitar that goes into the middle bit of 'Whole Lotta Love.' Jimmy thought it was just something we'd written in."

When Page recorded his guitar part with Plant, the backing track did not have any of the samples on it. Page didn't know that the samples, also including clips of "Black Dog," "The Ocean" and "Custard Pie," would be in the song.

The samples in the track were completed and then played to Page. "We played it for Jimmy, and I wish I'd had a camera to catch the expression on his face. It was a look of tiresome wonder," said Plant. "Like 'What is he doing, and why is this essential for him?'"

The B-side of "Tall Cool One" is another Now and Zen album track called "White, Clean and Neat." Both songs were written in one afternoon with keyboardist Phil Johnstone, but the idea for the B-side actually came from a demo Plant received while he was looking for a new backing band.

"Suddenly this tape came in by [a group called] The Rest Is History. They were produced by Phil Johnstone and his partner, who called themselves Acts of God," said Plant. "I heard the opening line, 'A brand new human being, razor sharp, all firm and tan/All clean, all pure, with a thirty-second attention span' – and instantly thought this wasn't Rod Stewart's new album."

Johnstone recalled the afternoon he and Plant co-wrote the form "White, Clean and Neat" took for Now and Zen. "I had this neat riff to go with it," Johnstone said. When Plant protested and complained that it was too bluesy, Johnstone retorted, "But that's what you are – you're a blues singer."

That moment was a turning point for Plant, who said that from then on he would enjoy his success and have a great time.

During the fadeout of "White, Clean and Neat," Plant can be heard singing the words, "Baby, baby, since I've been loving you," in yet another allusion to Led Zeppelin.
EDITOR'S NOTE: "Tall Cool One" made it to No. 25 on the Billboard singles chart in America in its mere five-week chart life. Plant's biggest success from the song came in July 1988, when he scored a lucrative deal with the Coca-Cola Company. He filmed a commercial and gave the soft drink corporation the rights to use "Tall Cool One" in commercials. Plant later regretted this deal.

In 1980, Led Zeppelin met on the island of Jersey to discuss their future following John Bonham's death. Peter Grant remembers, "What happened was the three of them - Jimmy, Robert, and Jonesy - went over to Jersey in the Channel Islands to have a discussion of what they were going to do in the future. I had never raised the subject with them. When they came back, we arranged to rent a suite at the Savoy in London and we had afternoon tea, just the four of us. They looked at me and said, 'What do you think, Gee?' And I said I couldn't see them carrying on as it was, because it couldn't be the same. It was a very emotional moment. They all said, 'Thank God you've said that, because that's what we thought while we were away.'"

YOUR TIME IS GONNA COME
57 - SMOKESTACK LIGHTNING
"Black Mountain Side"  - уже частично упоминалась на форуме в связи с названием... вряд ли могла быть инспирирована Джэншем - Пэйдж просто содрал в данном случае и присвоил авторство - Джэнш обратился к экспертам по авторскому праву на предмет вчинить Пэйджу иск - но эксперты отсоветовали, поскольку исходная мелодия народная

по поводу Dazed And Confosed в сети есть такие привязки Jake Holmes Finally Sues Jimmy Page Over "Dazed and Confused" (этого года материалы)
"When the album came out! And then, stupidly, I never followed up on it," Jake Holmes said. "In the early 1980's, I did write them a letter and I said basically: 'I understand it's a collaborative effort, but I think you should give me credit at least and some remuneration.' But they never contacted me."
DAZED AND CONFUSED

Live Yardbirds Featuring Jimmy Page (1971) - the withdrawn LP
