The riff is Page's but the lyrics are taken from Willie Dixon's "You Need Love." Plant has said, "Page's riff was Page's riff. It was there before anything else. I just thought, 'well, what am I going to sing?' That was it, a nick. Now happily paid for. At the time, there was a lot of conversation about what to do. It was decided that it was so far away in time (it was in fact 7 years) and influence that…well, you only get caught when you're successful. That's the game." The middle section which was edited for the original release as a single features Page and Eddie Kramer doing a lot of "random knob twisting." Apart from that, sounds of sirens, screams, demolition sounds, an orgasmic wail from Plant can be heard. Page also uses backwards echo, a technique he pioneered with the Yardbirds and in a Mickie Most session. In 1985 Willie Dixon sued the band over their use of his lyrics. An out of court settlement was reached. A similar `sound' is achieved by the Small Faces on their 1966 debut album with the track "You Need Loving."

The weird middle section created by theremin, some recorded drums, vocal sounds from Plant, and some random knob-twisting by Page and Eddie Kramer.
C.C.S. (including Alexis Korner) did an instrumental version in 1969 which was released as a single and was used on the British "Top of the Pops" for many years. It is available on "The No 1 70's Rock Album" (Polygram 5257172) and "The Premier Collection of Instrumental Hits Vol 3" (Kenwest KNEWCD 735).
Whole Lotta Love was also done by King Curtis (c 1970), The Temple City Kazoo Orchestra (c 1979), and Joey Cheezhe, among others.
Used as the theme song for BBC "Top of the Pops", recorded by a group called C.C.S., led by Alexis Korner.
